In 1985 the German mathematician Gerhard Frey claimed that if the Taniyama-Shimura conjecture can be proven then it would follow that FLT is true!
In 1986 Ken Ribet, a professor at Univ. of Calif., with the help of Barry Mazur, proves Frey’s conjecture.
