Chapter 1

Question:  How do I use the shell method to find the volume of the solid of Example 2?
Answer:  Using vertical, instead of horizontal, strips, we resolve to get the hollow shell.  It's radius is the distance x from the y axis, its height is 1-y, and its thickness is wpe1.jpg (813 bytes).  The volume of the shell is wpe3.jpg (1217 bytes).

Thus we have

wpe4.jpg (1670 bytes)
wpe5.jpg (1674 bytes)
wpe6.jpg (1595 bytes)
wpe8.jpg (1607 bytes)
wpe9.jpg (889 bytes)
